Braid, fluorocarbon, monofilament… with so many options, choosing the right line can feel overwhelming. This section breaks down the differences and pairs them with guide- and outfitter-recommended products to help you fish smarter and with confidence.

Fishing Line

Monofilament is soft, flexible, and easy to work with, offering stretch that acts as a shock absorber—ideal for beginners or for techniques where cushioning strikes is helpful. Here is the catch though: that same stretch can reduce sensitivity, making it harder to detect subtle bites or bottom structure. Choose line color based either on what fish are least likely to see—clear, blue, or green depending on the water—or on what you’ll see best, such as high-visibility varieties. If you go the high-vis route, it’s best to use a leader at the end of your line to avoid spooking fish.

In fact, the Berkley Trilene Big Game is frequently mentioned alongside the XL as another high-quality, budget-friendly monofilament that guides trust on the water.

While many of the fishing guides in our network still spool monofilament on client reels, the vast majority have switched to braid for their own setups. Braid offers maximum sensitivity with virtually zero stretch, transmitting even the faintest taps or bumps—essential in deep water, around structure, or when chasing light-biting fish. Its thin diameter-to-strength ratio also enhances casting distance and lure control. The tradeoff: braid’s visibility and lack of stretch can be drawbacks unless paired with the right leader.

Power Pro is a clear favorite for braided line among the fishing guides we work with. While there are cheaper alternatives on the market, none have earned the same level of trust within the guide community.

Fluorocarbon is denser and transmits vibrations exceptionally well, giving anglers enhanced feel and feedback through the rod. Nearly invisible underwater, it’s a top choice as a leader for braided line, especially in clear water or when making finesse presentations.
